74HC165 — 8-bit parallel-in / serial-out shift register
Loads eight parallel inputs on one pin strobe, then clocks them out one bit at a time. 16-pin DIP.
Turns eight inputs into three wires. The classic use is reading a bank of buttons, switches or a keypad without spending eight I/O pins on it, and several can be daisy-chained for more.
