74HC245 — Octal bus transceiver, 3-state
Eight bidirectional buffers in a 20-pin DIP, with a direction pin and an output-enable.
This is the standard way to hang a peripheral off a shared data bus: direction selects read or write, and output-enable lets the chip drop off the bus entirely so something else can drive it.
